Ransomware is a type of malicious software that takes full access to your computer and demands a ransom from you. It basically enters your computer and locks your file system or data. You have to pay a huge amount of money to restore it. Now it can happen to any computer at any time.
How it works:
- Through phishing emails or files
It basically sends a link or file through a phishing email which, once downloaded, takes over your device.
- Data encryption
Ransomware encrypts important data on the device, causing the user to lose access to it.
- Demanding ransom
They ask users to pay a certain amount of ransom, which is paid through cryptocurrency (e.g. Bitcoin), to return their data.
There are usually some specific signs to recognize a ransomware attack. These are:
- File encryption or locking
Your computer files may suddenly change to an unknown format or extension.
A password or key may be asked when opening the file.
- Note on the desktop or in a folder (Ransom Note)
After a ransomware attack, a text file, HTML page, or pop-up message will appear on your desktop or in a file.
It will state that your files have been locked and that money (Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency) is being demanded to restore the files.
- Computer slowness
Ransomware starts many processes after entering the system, which can slow down the computer.
- Antivirus ineffective
Your antivirus or security software may be turned off.
Some security settings in the system may be changed.
- Redirection in the Internet browser
The browser may suddenly be redirected to an unknown website.
- Ransomware dialog or pop-up window
A special pop-up or lock-like message appears on the screen.
Types of ransomware
There are different types of ransomware, such as:
- Crypto Ransomware
It encrypts data, thereby blocking user access.
- Locker Ransomware
It locks the entire system, making it impossible to use the device.
- Double Extortion Ransomware
In addition to encrypting data, it also threatens to steal it and leak it on the internet.
- Server Ransomware
It attacks the servers of companies or organizations, thus disabling their entire network.
Ways to prevent ransomware
- Use anti-malware software
Protect your device by using strong anti-malware software.
- Warning
Avoid downloading suspicious emails, links or files.
- System updates
Keep your software and operating system updated to close security vulnerabilities.
- Suspicious emails
They gain access to your device through suspicious emails.
